End of Nero Lite

As no further updates are released for Nero 7 and Nero 8 its time to bring this project to an end.

With the release of InfraRecorder 0.50 there is now a program which is open source, easy to handle and doesn’t bloat the system with software you don’t use that much.

In fact, I hardly burn anything since my new car radio reads audio directly from SD-cards.

Of course I release a last update as I promised earlier.

Nero 9 to big to handle

Dear Nero Lite users,

I have spend some time working on Nero 9 Lite but soon I discovered activation didn’t work properly when using a custom installer. So the best way to deal with Nero 9 for now is to modify the original setup files directly or just run the original installer and select the components you want. Thanks to Windows Vista and Windows 7 requirements Nero’s installer is improved anyway.

Note I will release another update for Nero 7 and 8 Lite to fix some minor issues.

Unicode builds now available!

Yet another Nero Lite update this month. With the release of a new Inno Setup beta a long awaited feature has been added:

Unicode support!

This allows you to install any language version of Nero onto your system.

Some improvements

Here’s another build of Nero Lite mainly to fix the automated serial entering. Thanks to help from MSFN forum member XhmikosR also some improvements are added to the Nero Lite installer .

Although I keep maintaining support for Nero 7 Lite and Nero 8 Lite I will not put effort into making the SDK support Nero 9.

Nero Lite build 1.18.2.1 changelog:
- Fix automated serial entering
- Implement user suggestions:

Add Nero7 E-AC3/TrueHD and DTS Express support
Improve registry cleanup on uninstall
Disable multiple instances of setup to run
Detect if Nero is running

As a suprise Nero released just before Christmas an update to Nero 8. As expected no release notes were given, but who need those anyway?

Nero Lite updated installer

Last month I uploaded new builds to test some changes I made to the Nero Lite installer code to clean up the Automated Serial Entering code. Although the updated code worked in most situations, it was not reliable enough. I hope the new code works as good as it used to be.

Nero 7/8 Lite Build 1.17.2.2 changelog:
- Implement AutoItX dll calls (Automated serial entering)
- Improve filetype associations
- Fix Nero 7 English ProductSetup tool (Do you want to apply changes? prompt)
- Cleanup some temporary files after install

Some history…

I started the Nero Lite project about 2 years ago. At that time I just discovered how to build an unattended Windows XP setup. Using nLite I could gain some extra space on my installation cd, and I would like to have Nero included with it.

One problem, the Nero 7 installer was about 140 MB in size and including it would leave no space for anything else. As I didn’t need the full suite stripping the installer was the key to success. I read about modifying the existing installer on MSFN. It turned out to be a hard process and knowing modifications were different for each update I decided to build my own installer for Nero 7.

I chose Inno Setup for its ease of use and built in features, like the possibility to select different components and multi-language support.

Updating the Nero 7 Lite installer to the latest version was a lot of work each month, so automating the process was necessary. This was the beginning of the Nero Lite SDK.

When Nero 8 was released it was even bigger than Nero 7. Almost all binary files had loads of visual resources inside them. Nero 8 Lite would now become two times as big as Nero 7 Lite. I already had experience modifying resources for Nero 7 Micro, but trimming Nero 8 down was a much bigger project.
Automating this resulted in building resource scripts for every file included meanwhile keeping track of application breaking changes.

During this project I have fixed loads of bugs in the installer, implemented new features and tried to keep Nero working properly on each update. I even ported back most changes to support latest Nero 7 updates.

To maintain such a large project is very useful to me, and automating does save some time after all.

Nero Lite 8.3.6.0

With the release of Nero 8.3.6.0 no longer is stored the demo serial inside the installer, so maybe Nero updates will be less frequent from now on.

I have not tested current builds, as I don’t burn that much lately. Please report any issues here.

Last month Nero released a small update for their burning application. As I spend more time working on other projects and watching TV updating Nero Lite is delayed a bit.

Nero Lite build 1.17.0.1 changelog:

improve dialog handling script.
disable Nero ControlCenter update check prompt

The SDK will be updated in about a week.

Reading the Nero 8.3.2.1 changelog you might notice there are no big changes to the main burning program. Updating Nero 8 Lite and Micro should be easy though I have taken some time to make some internal code changes.

One big change of Nero 8.3.2.1 is that the Patent Activation mechanism – introduced in Nero 8 to prevent unauthorized people to compress video files – is now also required for creating VCD/SVCD’s. I have successfully transferred this protection mechanism to Nero Lite.

Apart from this, there are no changes to the main burning application. You might choose to skip this update for now if you are using the Micro version. However support is only given on latest Nero release version.

People who use Nero WaveEditor might want to upgrade to this new version since the annoying pauze/play bug is fixed.
